Les Variétés guide · Angers

Restaurant open at Christmas in Angers

A warm break during your Christmas shopping in Angers: boudin noir, boudin blanc, winter dishes and seafood depending on deliveries, in the city centre.

December in Angers means a packed city centre, heavy bags, cold hands and the need to sit down somewhere for twenty minutes. Les Variétés is at 33 boulevard du Maréchal Foch, right in the middle of the shopping, in a brasserie open since 1902.

Warming up between two shops

That is the most frequent use of the house in December, and the simplest: a hot drink, a table, time to catch your breath. We open at 9:30 am Monday to Friday and at 10 am on Saturdays, so before most shops open, and we close at 2 am. We are usually closed on Sundays, but we open on the Christmas market Sundays — 29 November, 6, 13 and 20 December 2026 — from 11:30 am to 4 pm; a group meal can also be arranged on a Sunday by reservation, once confirmed with the team.

What we serve in winter

Boudin noir and boudin blanc come back with the season, as do winter dishes and seafood depending on deliveries. Our meat is French. Our fish comes from Maison Savia, in Saumur. Nothing is guaranteed from one day to the next in December — that is the nature of seasonal produce — and today’s menu can be viewed online before you come.

End-of-year team meals

December is also the month of company meals, and they are booked early. We have five spaces: Entrée Foch for thirteen, Arrière Foch for seventeen, the Bressigny room for twenty-five, the Salle Haute for thirty, the terrace for forty-three, open all year round under its large awning. Eighty-five seats indoors, a hundred and twenty-eight with the terrace. For a group, call +33 2 41 88 46 62: at this time of year, the rooms go several weeks in advance.

Coming as a family

Christmas shopping is often done across three generations, with tired children and grandparents who need to sit down. A room rather than a passing table changes the day. Give the exact number when booking, children included: it decides the room we give you.

Booking in December

Book, really. The centre of Angers in December leaves no room for improvisation at lunchtime. Online for a table; for a group meal, the group request or the phone.

A house from 1902

The house opened in 1902. Its name is that of the Théâtre des Variétés, which stood almost opposite it, on the right. A hundred and twenty-four Decembers spent in the same place, watching the boulevard fill up and then empty. It is an address the people of Angers have known since childhood, and December is when that is felt most.

December lunch: shift your time

Practical advice rather than a sales pitch: between 10 and 24 December, the 12:30 pm slot is saturated throughout the centre of Angers. We open at 9:30 am on weekdays and at 10 am on Saturdays; having lunch at 11:45 am or 2 pm spares you the wait, and leaves you a calmer city centre for your shopping. Saturday is the busiest day of the month.

Meeting up when the family arrives

December also means brothers and cousins turning up on the evening train who need feeding somewhere. We close at 2 am, Monday to Saturday: a 10 pm train condemns nobody to a missed dinner. Let us know the number by phone, even late in the day.

Your group in practice

A team or family meal in a room hired privately, at no extra charge, and a group meal possible on Sundays, by reservation and once confirmed with the team. As for conditions: nothing that depends on deliveries is promised — seafood, boudin and winter dishes come back with the season, not every day, and today’s menu can be viewed online; and no service on Sundays for a single table, apart from the Christmas market Sundays (29 November, 6, 13 and 20 December 2026, from 11:30 am to 4 pm).

The questions we are asked

Are you open between Christmas and New Year? End-of-year opening hours are confirmed by phone: call +33 2 41 88 46 62. Are you open on Sundays? Usually not, except on the Christmas market Sundays — 29 November, 6, 13 and 20 December 2026, from 11:30 am to 4 pm; a group can also be welcomed by reservation, once confirmed with the team. Can we book for a company meal? Yes, and you need to do so several weeks in advance. How many people? Up to thirty in a single room, eighty-five indoors.

Our five spaces, in December

Entrée Foch, thirteen seats, at the front: the short stop between two shops. Arrière Foch, seventeen seats, set back, the quietest when the city centre is noisy. The Bressigny room, twenty-five seats. The Salle Haute, thirty seats upstairs, the room for end-of-year company meals. The terrace, forty-three seats, open all year round under its large awning, December included. Eighty-five under cover, a hundred and twenty-eight in all, taken from the floor plan.

The December company meal, in detail

It is the topic of the month and it needs preparing early. We need the exact number, the date, the start time, and two or three dishes fixed in advance — for thirty people, an open menu turns the service into an ordeal. Also mention special diets and allergies when booking, not on the evening itself. And bear in mind that December’s rooms go several weeks in advance: a call at the beginning of November is not excessive. +33 2 41 88 46 62 is still more effective than a form for this kind of request.

The neighbourhood at shopping time

Boulevard du Maréchal Foch is in the centre, within walking distance of the place du Ralliement, Saint-Maurice cathedral and the Château d’Angers, and close to Saint-Laud station for family arriving by train. In other words, right in the middle of where you do your shopping. You put the bags down, warm up, and set off again. It is the simplest use of the house in December, and by far the most frequent.

A brasserie open all day, since 1902

In December more than at any other time, continuous service is what counts. You do not eat at a fixed time when you are shopping: you eat when you cannot go on. We open at 9:30 am on weekdays and at 10 am on Saturdays, and the dining room does not close between services. The same table welcomes a hot chocolate at 3:30 pm, a jar of cottage pie at 4 pm or a dinner at 9 pm. It has worked like that for a hundred and twenty-four Decembers.

What winter brings back to the kitchen

Boudin noir and boudin blanc come back with the season. So do winter dishes, the ones that take time and make no sense in July. Seafood appears depending on deliveries, never on promise. Our meat is French, our fish comes from Maison Savia in Saumur, and that is precisely why the menu changes: we cook what we receive. Today’s menu can be viewed online before you cross town.
