A points recovery course for your driving licence is something nobody really chooses. Two days away from your work, your habits and your peace and quiet, in a room, with strangers. The lunch break is the only moment that belongs to you. Les Variétés is at 33 boulevard du Maréchal Foch, two minutes’ walk from the Mercure hotel, where most of the courses in Angers are held: a brasserie open since 1902, somewhere to take your mind off things for an hour.
One hour, not a minute more
The break usually lasts an hour, from 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm. Tell us when you arrive: “I’m on a course, I start again at 1:30 pm”. The service is set around it: two courses are served within thirty minutes of ordering, and you still have time for a coffee without watching the clock.
The lunch set menu, €24.90
Monday to Friday, starter and main, or main and dessert, for €24.90; three courses for €28.90, drinks extra. The set menu is served outside July and August. Meal vouchers and bank cards are accepted.
On Saturdays, the à la carte menu
Some courses finish on a Saturday. On that day there is no set menu: you have lunch à la carte, and it is a chance to try something different. The Saturday dishes are not the weekday ones; they are more generous, for a barely higher price.
Treating yourself, quite simply
A customer who came for his course told us frankly: he came back on the second day for the dessert. Our chocolate fondant, made in-house by Théo, our chef, is the best seller on the menu, and it lifts your spirits. The apple tart, with its scoop of vanilla ice cream, its caramel and its whipped cream, is just as comforting with a good coffee. After a morning of rules and statistics, a real meal in a real brasserie puts you back in a good mood: French meat, fish from maison Savia in Saumur, everything cooked on the premises.
A breath of fresh air
The terrace on boulevard Foch is open all year round, under its large awning: a chance to get some air between two sessions in the training room. Inside, a lively dining room or a quieter corner, depending on your mood of the day.
Come alone, leave with company
People often come to a course alone, and sometimes leave with two or three fellow participants. A table for one or a table for six: there is no need to book for a few people, but a call the day before guarantees the seats if the group is having lunch together.
If your course is not at the Mercure
Other courses are held on rue Guillaume-Lekeu or rue Darwin, several kilometres away. With a one-hour break, we are too far: you are better off having lunch near your training room. This guide applies to courses in the city centre and the station district.
In the evening, if you are staying in Angers
Participants who have come from far away often spend the night between the two days. We serve in the evening from 6:30 pm to 10 pm, and the dining room stays open until 2 am, Monday to Saturday. A way to end the first day other than in front of the hotel television: at the bar, people chat, meet one another and put the world to rights over a drink or a coffee with friendly company.
