Échappées d’art turns Angers into an open-air gallery: murals, sculptures and installations spread across the city, free to discover on foot, by bike or from either tram line. It runs for several months of the year and it is not a show with a curtain-up — it is a walk. Les Variétés stands at 33 boulevard du Maréchal Foch, on the route.
It is not a performance, it is a walk
That distinction decides where a meal fits. There is no start time to meet, no curtain to catch: you set off when you like and stop when your legs say so. The need is therefore not “dinner before eight” but “somewhere to sit down halfway round”. A brasserie does exactly that: a coffee, a drink, a plate, and off you go again.
Lunch, and the dead hours of the afternoon
We serve the menu at lunch and at dinner. In between — and this is the useful part for a trail that spreads across a whole day — jar dishes are served at any hour: duck parmentier, pea risotto, hachis parmentier. If you arrive at half past three with children who have been walking all afternoon, you will not be sent away with a packet of crisps.
The terrace, when the sky agrees
Forty-three seats outside, and it is the right spot for a pause in the middle of an urban walk: you sit, you watch the street, you move on. But it depends on the weather and we never hold it in advance. Eighty-five indoor seats across four rooms guarantee the fallback.
By bike, by tram, on foot
The trail works in all three, and guided walks and bike rides are organised through the season. 33 boulevard du Maréchal Foch is within walking distance of Place du Ralliement, Angers Castle, Saint-Maurice cathedral and Saint-Laud station. If you are riding the trail, it is a natural halt at the centre of the map.
With children
A free outdoor art trail is a children's outing. Our five spaces run from thirteen to forty-three seats. Arrière Foch, seventeen seats, is set back from the entrance: that is the one we give to pushchairs and small children. We have high chairs and a children's menu. Say how many you are when you book, children included — it changes the room.
We are closed on Sundays
The trail itself is visible every day: it is outdoors and it never shuts. Many people therefore walk it on a Sunday, the one day we are closed, all day. That is the main caveat on this page.
At the table
A French brasserie menu, cooked on the premises. Our meat is French, our fish comes from Maison Savia in Saumur. Vegetarian dishes on the menu, and the house caters for vegan diets.
A house from 1902 in a city being repainted
There is something pleasant about crossing a city covered in contemporary murals and then sitting down in a room that opened in 1902. The name comes from the Théâtre des Variétés, which stood almost opposite, slightly to the right. Angers has always put art in the street; the present trail is only its most recent version.
Checking the route and the guided tours
The works, the route and the calendar of guided visits change from one edition to the next. The City of Angers publishes the current trail, the maps and the tour dates: that is the source to consult before setting off.
