Le Quai is the national drama centre for the Pays de la Loire: theatre, dance, music, circus. It stands on the Cale de la Savatte, in the La Doutre quarter, on the far bank of the Maine, facing the castle. Les Variétés are at 33 boulevard du Maréchal Foch, on the city-centre bank. Between the two lies the river — and that is what this page is about.
You have to cross the Maine
That single fact organises the evening. Le Quai is not around the corner from boulevard Foch: you walk down to the river, across it, and up again into La Doutre. Nothing difficult on foot, but it is not next door, and a dinner started at half past seven for an eight o'clock curtain is a gamble. Eat earlier, or eat afterwards.
The right hour is half past six
We open at 9.30 a.m. Monday to Friday, at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Dinner at 6.30 or 7 gives you time to eat without watching the clock, then to walk over calmly. Tell us the time of the performance when you book: we adjust the pace of the service, and it is the only way to avoid being served dessert while the auditorium is already seated without you.
Or afterwards, which is often better
A show that ends at half past ten leaves few options in Angers, and that is exactly the moment you actually want to talk about what you have just seen. We close at 2 a.m., Monday to Saturday. Jar dishes are served at any hour if you have not eaten: duck parmentier, pea risotto, hachis parmentier. By some distance, this is the use we see most often.
Beware of Sunday performances
Le Quai programmes matinees and Sunday shows. We are closed on Sundays, all day. If your ticket is for a Sunday, this page will be no help to you that day — better to know now.
Going out as a group
A theatre subscription is often taken with friends, and people meet before. Boulevard Foch is an address every local can point to, which makes it a more practical meeting point than the theatre forecourt. Our five spaces run from thirteen to forty-three seats, and a party of twenty-five fits in the Bressigny room. Online booking up to six people, 02 41 88 46 62 beyond that.
The terrace, depending on the season
Forty-three seats outside, pleasant for a drink before walking down to the river on long evenings. It depends on the sky and we do not hold it in advance: eighty-five indoor seats across four rooms guarantee the fallback.
At the table
A French brasserie menu, cooked on the premises. Our meat is French, our fish comes from Maison Savia in Saumur. The day's menu can be checked online. Vegetarian dishes, and a children's menu for family shows.
Two theatres, a century apart
The house opened in 1902 and takes its name from the Théâtre des Variétés, which stood almost opposite, slightly to the right. Le Quai was inaugurated in 2007 on the other bank. Dining here before going over means moving from a vanished theatre to a contemporary one by crossing a river — not the worst programme for an evening in Angers.
What we do not promise
Being next door to the theatre: it is on the other bank, and we will not pretend otherwise. An express service at a quarter to eight without warning. The terrace, which depends on the sky. And Sunday, when we are closed.
